Throughout the history of cinema there have been a number of famous scenes featuring balconies. We embarked on a movie-watching marathon to find the most iconic movie scenes where star-struck lovers, presidents’ wives and Arabian princes have made movie history from a balcony.
Romeo & Juliet
Perhaps the most famous balcony of all is the one that Romeo stands under and calls for his love, Juliet. While there have been a few film adaptations of Shakespeare’s tragic love story, we rate the contemporary version directed by Baz Luhrmann and featuring Leonardo diCaprio and Claire Danes in the lead.
Evita Perron was once the most beloved and most hated woman in Argentina, starting out as a B-grade film actress before becoming the President’s wife. In the 1996 film adaptation, lead actress Madonna stars in the iconic scene where she sings “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” from the Casa Rosada balcony.
Breaking away from history for a second, we have this classic 1989 film. John Cusack is a noble underachiever trying to win the heart of a beautiful valedictorian, played by Ione Skye. In the film’s iconic scene Cusack stands with a boombox raised over his head outside Skye’s room and finally wins her heart after spending most of the film proving his love for her.
Trouble-making thief Aladdin falls for Princess Jasmine in this classic Disney animated film. He pretends to be a prince to win her heart and visits her one evening on her balcony. He convinces her to join him on his magic carpet for a ride above the city, giving the film an entry to the movie history books as one of the great scenes of all time.
